“Système Friche Théâtre (S.F.T.) is the association which established and manages the Belle de Mai project. Since 1992, it has been welcoming producers and artists and encouraging synergy and an interdisciplinary approach in all fields: cultural, urban, economic and social. I like the word “Friche” (which refers to renovated areas): it seems to say that anything is possible in an atmosphere which is buzzing with excitement.
Here are a few figures as proof: more than 500 events are presented here every year, 900 French and foreign artists come to work here, more than 30,000 hours of professional training are given and there are 70 facilities (employing 450 people): artistic producers, companies, starter companies, services, employer groups, media… an average of 100,000 people come to the “Friche” every year to attend a show or to participate in a training course, a workshop, a meeting…
The aim of the 3 branches of the “Friche”, which are “Patrimoine” (Heritage), “Media et Spectacle” (Media and Shows) and “Culture Vivante” (Living Culture) together with the Système Friche Théâtre, is to collaborate more and more closely to achieve unity on the site. By pooling their resources they will help give substance to our “cultural project for an urban plan”. The stakes are considerable: I would like the “Friche” to become the central area of urban and cultural redevelopment in Marseille, combined with a centre for artistic exchange for the Euro-Mediterranean zone which is both local and international.
The mix of an industrial production centre and a centre for creative research and development offers a great opportunity.
